The following online resources are excellent options for Parents (and Teachers) for information related to current educational, social-emotional, sensory, attention and behavioral concerns.  

Please check the websites for specific Webinars (usually short - often one hour or less), Online Classes, and Resources (including strategies and information you can download).  Registration is EASY and all resources are FREE!  Webinars are conducted through ZOOM.  Online Workshops are also archived and available for you to watch if you miss the presentation date.

Supported Decision-Making Training Series

This virtual training series will be held once a week. During this series you will get important information on how to develop a supported decision-making agreement (SDMA). SDMAs allow individuals with disabilities to exercise maximum independence and make choices and decisions about their own lives with support from people they choose.

January 10 - What is Supported Decision-Making and What Kind of Support Do I Want?
January 17 - When Do I Want Support Discovery Tool
January 24 - Relationship Map Tool and Selecting Your Supporters
February 2 - Completing Virginia’s Supported Decision-Making Agreement Template

This series is progressive so we encourage you to register for and attend all four sessions. This series is designed for individuals with disabilities, their families, and supporters. All January sessions will be held from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm. The February 2nd session will be held from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm.

 

Partners Engaging Partners Collaborative
January 12, 2023 | 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

As part of our advocacy and family engagement initiative, PEATC has launched the Partners Engaging Partners Collaborative. This professional, peer networking collaborative is a great opportunity for Virginia professionals working in the field of family engagement. Attendees will have the opportunity to collaborate and increase their awareness of the different community resources and services that support families throughout the Commonwealth. Best practices in family engagement will be highlighted as we collectively work to ensure families have continued opportunities to engage and that all students can thrive. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.

 

The Power of Engaging Families

Creating relationships between parents and schools, which focus on engaging the families of students with disabilities, positively impacts students. During this interactive workshop, participants will explore their personal definition of “family engagement” and how both parents and professionals share in the responsibility for the success of their students.

 

The Big Step: Early Intervention to Preschool

Anatomy of an IEP

This presentation dissects the IEP, examines the parts individually, discusses the function of each section, and how the parts come together to create an effective document. You will learn constructive and practical tips to help create an IEP that supports the student’s access to a free and appropriate public education.

WAZE to Adulthood Student Training
January 26, 2023 | 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for a live zoom training to learn ways to use your self-advocacy skills and to plan for the future you want! We will discuss some things you need to know about being 18 or older. This training will be Interactive, Interesting, and Incredibly FUN!

For students with disabilities age 12-22 who live in Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia ONLY.

We will discuss why an evaluation for special education services is necessary, how to make a referral, key timelines for the special education process, and what to expect during the eligibility meeting. We will also go over Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE) and reasons to request an IEE.

PEATC in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education is pleased to offer SEAC trainings aimed at helping SEAC members understand the role of the local Special Education Advisory Committee in Virginia and to build a more efficient and effective advisory committee.

PEATC, in collaboration with VDOE, has developed IEP University (IEPU) to help provide families and professionals with accurate and useful information around IEP development and meetings. IEPU is a self-paced online training with easy-to-understand guidance on the special education process, the IEP document, and ways to develop collaborative relationships among schools and families. IEPU will target practical strategies aimed at helping future IEP meetings be more positive, productive, and collaborative for everyone involved.

 
February 6, 2023 - February 26, 2023

Families of children receiving special education services find themselves in a world filled with complicated policies, confusing acronyms and terms, and piles of paperwork. Often families find themselves looking for information and background knowledge to help them better support their children through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. The Building Strong Parent Advocates training provides information to help families build a solid foundation to understand the special education process while empowering them to be their child’s best advocate.

 
February 13, 2023 - April 4, 2023

Join us for this FREE 5-session SELF-PACED online course that focuses on providing parent-friendly transition information to help make transition planning easier. This course is designed for parents/caregivers of elementary, middle, or high school students that receive special education services, and the professionals that support them. The goal is to share factual information on transition services and to help make the transition from school services to the adult services world less confusing. Participants who complete the full course will receive a certificate of completion showing 7.5 hours.

Lunch and Learn Online Webinars - free registration - conducted Noon - 1:00pm.

VCU ACE Lunch and Learn Series provides weekly opportunities for families to participate in interactive sessions on a variety of topics related to supporting their children with ASD.  Families can register to attend the one hour Zoom sessions or can view past sessions in the archives.  Previous sessions have included topics such as Communication Strategies for Families, Parent Engagement, and Helping Your Child Make Successful Transitions at Home.
